What is the building code?

The California Building Standards Code (CBC) is a set of regulations that govern the design and construction of buildings in California which includes other building codes and standards, such as the California Electrical Code, Mechanical Code, and Plumbing Code.

The CBC includes requirements for fire and life safety, structural safety, and access compliance. It also includes a chapter on energy efficiency, which encourages the use of electric heat pumps and solar photovoltaic systems. Building codes are created by city or county officials with the help of construction professionals and is updated every 3 years.
