How should waste from a waterless toilet be disposed of, and who is responsible?

Answer

Composted material or ash from a waterless toilet cannot be disposed of on-site. Incomplete composting can leave harmful bacteria or pathogens in the waste, making it unsafe for people and the environment.

Under Sonoma County’s program:

  • All waste must be hauled offsite by a licensed waste hauler for proper disposal.

  • Ash from incinerator toilets must also be disposed of safely and cannot be buried or spread on the property.

  • The property owner is responsible for ensuring proper operation and maintenance of the system.

  • All waterless toilets must be enrolled in the County’s Operational Permit (OPR) Program for ongoing monitoring and recordkeeping.
