Can a new large residential propane (LPG) tank be in the front setbacks?

Customer question - If a utility shed cannot be located within the front setback, can a propane tank or a water tank be placed there? Are there any specific setbacks or restrictions for these installations?

Answer from experts:

Large residential propane tanks may be located within the front yard setback (also within side and rear yard setbacks), subject to the following standards:

  • Fire Code setbacks apply. General setbacks for residential tanks are:

  • If the tank is within an enclosure or fence, the fence and/or enclosure is subject to all applicable setbacks and height restrictions, for front, side, and rear yard setbacks, Scenic Resource (SR) setbacks, and Riparian Corridor (RC) setbacks.

    • See PJR-133 Fence Guidelines for more information on fences.

Note: Unlike residential propane tanks, water storage tanks must meet all applicable setbacks, including front, side, and rear yard setbacks, Scenic Resource (SR) setbacks, and Riparian Corridor (RC) setbacks.
