A guest house is a detached residential accessory structure limited to 640 square feet in size, does not have provisions for cooking, and may contain a bathroom. Any accessory structure must meet the development standards of the applicable zoning district, and the standards in Detached Residential Accessory Structures. Generally, one of each type of accessory structure is allowed.
Generally speaking, a guest house must meet all development standards such as setbacks for a given parcel. Zoning site considerations such as setbacks, building height, or maximum lot coverage are considered “Development Standards” and are established by the zoning ordinance provided for your parcel. You can look up the zoning of a parcel, including Development Standards, on our website, where you’ll find an explanation of the zoning code and links to the code that includes the Development Standards.
A guest house is permitted via a Building Permit. If the parcel is in a scenic resource area, a design review may be required.
