How does the City determine if a structure was constructed with the benefit of a building permit?

City staff will rely on old Building Division and Planning Division records to determine whether the area in question was constructed legally with the benefit of a building permit. If the area in question was constructed without the benefit of a building permit, the applicant must submit plans to the Planning Division. The Planning Division will then determine whether additional Planning review is required to legalize the unpermitted work, or whether the unpermitted work can be legalized through the Building Permit process.
