Can I convert my attached garage into habitable space/ a room?

In certain residential zoning districts (RL1 & RL2), conversion of a garage for residential use, such as a new bedroom, office, living room, etc., could be allowed with approval of an Administrative Use Permit. To be approved for an Administrative Use Permit, certain requirements must be met, including providing a space on the property for parking, which must be provided within a front yard in a driveway that is at least 18 feet in depth, within a side setback area that is at least 10 feet in width, or parking is provided the rear of the lot. Please note that the Administrative Use Permit process is for projects that seek to extend the living space of the existing house. If you wish to convert the garage into an Accessory Dwelling Unit (an independent living unit), a different type of permit would be required. Please see the Planning Division's Accessory Dwelling Unit website page for more information on ADUs.
